To login to the ComStream ABR200, ABR202 ABR202A model receivers (click on receiver's name for it's manual), you need a computer with a free serial port, a serial cable, and a terminal communications program such as Windows® HyperTerminal™ or Commo™.

Installation of the Terminal Communications Program:

We will assume that you are going to use Commo™ as your terminal communications program to setup your receiver. To download a pre-configured, shareware version of Commo™, click here, and download the file CommoZip.EXE to your desktop. Once the download is finished, double click the file to open it (it's a self-extracting EXE). It will ask you where you want the files to be unzipped to, the default "C:\Commo" directory should be fine, if not, specify another directory. Once the files have been extracted, you need to know what COM port your receiver is plugged into on your computer. If you're not sure, you can usually find out by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and choosing properties. When the "System Properties" window opens, click on the "Device Manager" tab at the top. Look for your serial ports and what COM port they are on as seen in Figure 1.

Note: Make sure that you are plugged into the "M & C" port (Monitor & Control) on the receiver, and not the "User Data" or "Audio" ports.

If your COM port is COM1 then the program is ready to run. If your COM port is COM2, COM3, or COM4 you need to do the following: Go to the Windows DOS prompt:
C:\WINDOWS>
Type in the following at that prompt:
C:\WINDOWS>CD C:\COMMO
Then it will return:
C:\COMMO>
Type:
C:\COMMO>EDIT COMMO.SET
This will take you into Windows' DOS editor. Look for the line in that file that says:
*{por=1} Serial port number
Change the number (without deleting the curly braces) from 1 to what ever COM port number your receiver is connected to. Then press [Alt]+[F] to open the file menu, press [X] to exit, and when prompted to save the changes, select [Y] for yes.

When you're back at the DOS prompt ("C:\COMMO>") type "COMMO" to start the communications program. Once it's loaded and you get past the shareware screen, (and your receiver is hooked up) you should be able to press [ENTER] and have the receiver prompt you to login to it like this:

Login[Vx.xxx]:

If you see this (where x represents the version number), your computer, cable, and terminal communication software are properly configured and you can now talk to the receiver.

Logging into the Receiver:

The first thing to do before logging in is to turn your caps lock on. All passwords and commands to this receiver are in capital letters. The default password from the factory is HOMEYD. If you type this in and press enter you should be able to login to the receiver. If you cannot, you should check with the previous owner to see what the new password is.

Please note: If the receiver you have is not owned by you (for example: lent to you by another network), you should get their express permission to add a channel to their receiver before even attempting to login to it.

Talking to the Receiver:

To command the receiver you must enter two letter commands followed by value or fields of values. For a complete description of all commands please refer to your owners manual. For our purposes there are three main commands that we need to look at for setting or adding a channel to a receiver. They are the Channel Configuration command (CC), the Format Definition command (FD), and the Format Select command (FS). The first thing to do once you are logged in is to get the CC, FD, and FS values for your receiver and write them down somewhere safe. To retrieve these values, just type the commands at the ">" prompt with no value and the receiver will return what values it has stored for those commands.

If the first value of your CC command is a 3 and/or the first value of your FD command is 1, call (386-776-2009) or email support, with the values of the CC, FD, and FS commands from your receiver ready, and we'll create a custom set of commands that will not overwrite an existing channel in your receiver's channel configuration. If the first value of your CC command is not a 3, and the first value of your FD command is not a 1, then you can add our channel by typing the following commands:

Login[Vx.xxx]:******

>
CC 3,3706800,64000,1,1,0

>FD 1,8,3,7,0,0

Then to select between our channel and a previous channel (if you have one) type the FS command, a space, and the number 1 for our channel, or FS, followed by a space, and the first number returned by the FD command of your previous channel.

You can also setup 8 preset channel definitions that are switchable through the receiver's external status inputs (Relay Control Port) by using the Preset Definition command (PD). For more information on doing so refer to your owners manual.
